Have you ever heard of the Michigan Register?
I hadn’t.
And considering that I have been teaching Michigan real estate law for a very long time, that got my attention.
The Michigan Register is published twice a month by the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules. Think of it as one of the places to look if you want to know what Michigan government has been doing while the rest of us were busy selling houses, building them, managing property and trying to remember where we left our keys.
It includes proposed administrative rules, notices of public hearings, rules that have actually been filed, agency guidelines, Attorney General opinions — and a running list of bills signed into law with their Public Act numbers.
So, naturally, I went looking.
Among the things I found:
🏠 Michigan recently enacted a law restricting certain large institutional investors from purchasing additional single-family homes.
🏢 Michigan also changed its construction law to allow a single exit stairway in certain multifamily buildings.
🔨 And proposed rules affecting the qualifications of building officials, inspectors and plan reviewers appeared in the September 1 issue.
Some of these things will matter to real estate licensees. Some will matter to builders. Some will matter to investors. And some will probably become material for an Acme continuing education class.
